Online UPS

On line UPS units are so-called because the load is continuously supplied from the UPS inverter.  Full galvanic isolation between the load and input is possible and the unit is full voltage and frequency independent of the mains supply.  This type of UPS offers protection against all types of power disturbances and assures clean, regulated power under all conditions.  Integration with diesel generators is easily achieved for long standby times with sizes varying between 1 kVA and 400 kVA in single modules. Paralleling of these units is common for increased redundancy or upgraded power application.

Online UPS systems are ideal for:

- environments where electrical isolation is necessary or;

- when equipment is very sensitive to power fluctuations (surges & spikes).

An online UPS is generally more expensive than a modified sine wave UPS but may be necessary when the power environment is “noisy” such as;

- in an industrial settings or;

- with larger equipment loads like data centers or;

- when an extended-run backup generator is necessary.

The basic technology of the online UPS system is the same as in a standby or Line-Interactive UPS, however it typically costs much more, due to it having a much greater current AC-to-DC battery-charger/rectifier, and with the rectifier and inverter designed to run continuously with improved cooling systems. It is called a Double-Conversion UPS due to the rectifier directly driving the inverter, even when powered from normal AC current.

The main advantage to the On-line UPS system is its ability to provide an electrical firewall between the incoming utility power and sensitive electronic equipment, as opposed to a standby and Line-Interactive UPS which merely filters the input utility power. A double conversion UPS also provides a layer of insulation from power quality problems as it allows control of output voltage and frequency regardless of input voltage and frequency.
